Months of preparation, 1 interview, 150 points on Codewars and four weeks of pre-course down; Day 1 of the Maker’s Academy 12 week coding bootcamp starts.

The nerves are real but on meeting the full cohort it becomes clear that I am part of a driven and focussed group of individuals. Everyone has similar doubts; I tend to focus too much on a single topic, or how do I know when I know enough? Are other people’s skills better than mine? Imposter syndrome is a shared experience.

Fortunately the focus of the day is on exactly this. As important as the technical aspects of coding are the techniques of learning how to learn. Self-led learning is the absolute fulcrum of what maker’s is about.

Set goals, plan learning, test knowledge, analyse what works and what doesn’t then repeat. Awareness and mindfulness of what works best on a personal level is part of this.

It seems the first part of learning on the course is to do with learning itself.
